MOOC is a free Web-based distance learning program that is designed for the participation of large numbers of geographically dispersed students. The acronym MOOC is pronounced with a long “oo” sound, to rhyme with kook rather than book. MOOC was launched in 2008 and the term MOOC was originated out of the open educational resources (OER) movement. The definition of MOOC is:
M-Massive: An online course designed for enormous number of participants within a wider context of scalability and community. Also, utilising social connections to determine which students are having difficulty with connecting to the institution.
